Hillsborough Road upgrade step closer to fruition

“This upgrade is a huge win for the 36,000 motorists who use Hillsborough Road daily and for our electorate of Charlestown.”

Local MP Jodie Harrison was among the first to express her delight that proposed improvements to the busy thoroughfare are finally moving ahead.

Tenders are now being called for the detailed design for stage one of the much-needed project.

The NSW Government is providing $35 million to construct upgrades to the 1.8-kilometre stretch of road, from the Newcastle Inner City Bypass roundabout to the existing duplication west of Crockett Street.

“It’s great news,” Ms Harrison said.

“It will improve safety and reduce local bottlenecks while providing a welcome boost to the economy.

“Once the upgrade’s complete, it’s expected commuters will save up to four minutes in travel time during the morning and afternoon peaks due to reduced congestion.”

Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper also welcomed the next stage of the process.

“Residents have been campaigning for upgrades to Hillsborough Road for many years,” he said.

“I know there will be many people very happy to hear about the progress on this long-awaited project.

“Construction is expected to start in 2025 and take about 18 months to complete depending on final staging arrangements.

“It involves upgrading the Crockett Street intersection, which includes the installation of traffic lights and duplication of 700m of the road at this location.”

Transport for NSW sought feedback from the community on the concept design and environmental assessment in November 2022, with the submissions report published in August 2023.

Timing for construction of the remaining stages is subject to project approvals and funding.

The tender, for stage one, opened on Friday 10 November and closes on Friday 15 December.

It’s due to be awarded in March.
