Motherhood ignited a passion inside Kim Oakhill that yearned to create a legacy for her children.
So, she ventured down a new path of creative, soul-fulfilling ventures and became a very successful modern marriage celebrant.
Then, in February 2016, following the death of her friend’s little girl, the Medowie resident founded Helpful Love – a social enterprise which offers a practical gift of help in lieu of flowers.
For the same price as a flower delivery, Helpful Love is a gift voucher that can be used for cleaning, meals, massage, lawn maintenance, counselling or groceries.
Kim’s mission is to grow the Helpful Love movement across Australia and, eventually, around the globe.
“When people are grieving, we feel helpless, so we send flowers,” she says.
“Through Helpful Love, we can now send a helping hand instead.
“[This could be] a cleaner, someone to mow the lawns and do the weeding, or credit for an online grocery order – something that actually helps our loved ones when they need it most.”
Kim’s work with Helpful Love has led to her nomination for the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards.
The awards celebrate and recognise Australian mums in business who are achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service, and digital innovation.
They are also designed to acknowledge the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.
Kim says there are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood.
“By having a home-based online business, I can be more present with my children,” she says.
“I can drop them off at school or home school during challenging COVID times, and show my five and seven-year-old that, if they have a vision and dream and they work hard, they can achieve anything they set their heart on.”
The winners of the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards will be announced in October.
