Heaton Street’s unsavoury makeover

SHARE

With wait times of two-to-three weeks for waste pick-ups, illegal dumping sites like Jesmond’s Heaton Street have become a frequent problem in the area.

But, it shouldn’t be that way.

That’s the opinion of Maryland resident Sue O’Neil.

She believes utilising local government services, such as Snap, Send and Solve, can make a big difference.

“Illegal dumping is unnecessary and disgusting,” she stated.

“However, with the kerbside collection delays, it takes seven days for digital vouchers to be processed, giving time for dump sites to evolve.

“Then it gets out of control.

“One person will start it… and it snowballs.

“Council must see what is going on.

“That’s why they and concerned citizens should work together to mitigate the issue.”

Ms O’Neil said operating Snap, Send and Solve was a “piece of cake”.

“It’s an app that allows people to take images of issues in their area to notify local councils,” she explained.

“Illegal dumping was the highest reported matter on the platform last year.”

While council cleared the area on 21 March, the latest incident drew the attention of Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery, too.

She took to Facebook to voice her displeasure.

“I can appreciate the community’s frustration about this dumping,” the local member said.

“Not only is it an eyesore, it has the potential to attract vermin or become a fire hazard.”

City of Newcastle (CN) currently offers two kerbside collections a year and waste vouchers for the Summerhill Waste Management Centre at no cost to residents.

“This is not just for ratepayers but also renters,” Ms Hornery said.

“If you live in social housing or Home in Place, your provider should assist you with waste removal.

“If they don’t, please contact my office and my staff will attempt to assist you.”

Residents can also touch base with City of Newcastle directly to report illegal dumping.
