The COVID-19 outbreak in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) continues to worsen after 46 new cases of the virus were detected in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday night.

Newcastle and Lake Macquarie are the LGAs with the highest infection rate but Cessnock, Maitland, Muswellbrook and Port Stephens all added cases.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant flagged the region as an area she is worried about on Monday.

“In addition to the areas I am most concerned about, we are seeing increasing case numbers in areas around Newcastle, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Newcastle in general,” she said.

“So while a number of the cases are still arising from those areas of South Western Sydney and Western Sydney we are seeing increased cases both in regional areas in Western NSW and again in that Hunter, Central Coast Illawarra region.”

In Newcastle 21 cases were found across Jesmond, Wallsend, Newcastle, Mayfield, Merewether, Cooks Hill, Waratah, Birmingham Gardens, Newcastle West and Lambton.

Discoveries in Cardiff, Blackalls Park, Cardiff South, Macquarie Hills, Windermere Park, Lakelands and Marmong Point added 12 to Lake Macquarie’s total.

Cessnock recorded four new infections in Weston, Abermain and Heddon Greta while Maitland also added four in Rutherford, East Maitland and Woodberry.

Port Stephens found four cases in Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Twelve Mile Creek and Muswellbrook discovered one.

At least 23 of the cases were infectious in the community and 12 are unlinked, with six under investigation.

In the HNELHD there are 485 active cases with 13 people requiring care in hospital, one is in ICU.

NSW reported 787 new cases and 12 more deaths overnight.

Four people were in their 60s, two people were in their 70s, four people were in their 80s, and two people were in their 90s.

Six were not vaccinated, five people had received one dose, and one person had received two doses.

If you need to get tested for COVID-19 there are more than 410 clinics open across NSW.
