Gymnasts to shine at Cessnock’s 2025 Spring Cup

SHARE

The PCYC Gymnastics Spring Cup is returning to Cessnock this month for its fourth year.

And, it promises to be a talent-filled weekend on 13 and 14 September.

More than 600 athletes will compete, representing 21 PCYC clubs from across NSW including Dubbo, Shoalhaven, Port Macquarie, Glebe, the Southern Highlands and the Hunter.

Participants range from five to 20 years, eyeing off success in three categories: Team Gym, Artistic Gymnastics and Free G.

“This event gives PCYC athletes and organisations a rare opportunity to partake in a large-scale, exciting competition outside of Sydney,” PCYC gymnastics manager Justin Hayes said.

“The Spring Cup is also a chance for coaches to strengthen their networks and build lasting connections.

“So, it’s a celebration of gymnastics that supports our community and makes a real contribution to the regional economy.”

Several local youngsters are eager to showcase their abilities, too.

Bonnie McDuff.

Fourteen-year-old PCYC Cessnock gymnast Bonnie McDuff is counting down the days until she can demonstrate her flips and tricks at her home club.

She’s vying for gold alongside some of the state’s best up and coming talents.

“It’s a really special event,” she said.

“It is cool to compete against other PCYC gymnasts… and the younger ones get the chance to watch the older participants.

“So, it’s a huge inspiration for them as they progress through the ranks.”

In 2023, with no experience, McDuff put her hand up when a PCYC gymnastics team needed a last-minute fill in for a performance.

She’s been a dedicated member ever since.

“PCYC is my second home, like a family to me – it doesn’t matter what your background is or what your abilities are, you’re always welcome here,” she explained.

PCYC Lake Macquarie’s Lillie Anning.

While 11-year-old Lillie Anning has been training with PCYC Lake Macquarie for just a few months, she’s ready to give her all at the Spring Cup.

“I’m looking forward to showing off all my new skills that I’ve learned at PCYC,” she said.

“I would love to come home with gold but I’m just happy to be competing.

“My goal is to reach the advanced team and compete overseas… and I know my coaches will help me get there.”
