UPDATE: Man arrested after public place shooting in Kurri Kurri

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after a public place shooting in Kurri Kurri.

At about 12.15pm today (Wednesday 30 September), officers from Hunter Valley Police District were called to Lang Street, Kurri Kurri, following reports of shots fired.

Police have been told a man discharged a firearm into the air before fleeing into nearby bushland.

Hunter Valley Police District officers – with the assistance of PolAir and Operation Utah officers – established a perimeter and conducted a large-scale search of the area before the 40-year-old man was found and arrested shortly before 1.40pm on Lang Street.

He was taken to Cessnock Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Earlier: Gunman at large in Kurri Kurri

A gunman is at large in Kurri Kurri after it’s reported he fired shots into the air.

Police were called to Lang Street following reports of a man discharging a firearm into the air, before fleeing into bushland.

Police say he remains outstanding, and officers from Hunter Valley Police District and PolAir are conducting a large scale search of the area.

The public are being told to avoid the area, while Kurri Kurri Hospital remains in lockdown.
