GROUP 21: Clydsdale’s Thoroughbreds run riot

SHARE

Combatants’ attacking flair came to the fore in Bengalla Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League at the weekend.

Of the two matches played, with the Greta Braxton Colts-Denman Devils fixture being postponed, a total of 142 points were scored.

The Muswellbrook Rams registered their maiden win for 2022 at the expense of long-time rivals Aberdeen Tigers 38-30 while the Scone Thoroughbreds enforced the “mercy rule” over the Singleton Greyhounds with the score at 68-6.

At Pirtek Park, the visitors had the encounter wrapped up at half-time when they led 36-6.

Michael Radford crossed for Scone in the first minute and was quickly followed by Jared Austin (4th) and Luke Clydsdale (11th) with Jake Watts converting twice for a handy 16-0 margin.

Singleton then hit back to trail 16-6.

But, that’s as close as the two sides got.

Soon after, Blake Johnson touched down, with Isaac Austin, Caleb Taylor and Jared Austin, his second, also diving over in the opening 40.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it was more of the same following the break.

Watts backed up a break from dummy half by former Newcastle Knight and Canberra Raider Adam Clydsdale and re-started the scoring spree.

Almost immediately, the Thoroughbreds forced a line drop out and Dan Ritter ran through a large gap in the ensuing set of six to plant the ball under the posts.

Watts raised the flags and the advantage to 48-6.

Then a set move from the backs saw Jared Austin stroll in for his hat-trick, which Watts converted for 54-6.

Another try to Taylor and a double to Jarrod Wicks, plus a further Watts goal, blew it out to 68-6.

With 18 minutes of the clash remaining, the game was stopped, allowing the brave Greyhounds to regroup in the face of such adversity.
