Greyhounds put bite on defending premiers

SHARE

The Singleton Greyhounds made it two from two in the 2021 Bengalla Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League competition at the weekend.

On a big day for the club at Pirtek Park, the hosts produced a dazzling first half display to lead 2019 premiers Scone Thoroughbreds 18-0 at the break.

And, while the defending champions fought back to trail 18-12 at one stage, the Greyhounds refused to buckle under the pressure.

A late try and field goal secured the 23-12 victory.

Meanwhile, the Aberdeen Tigers unveiled senior debutants Dylan Thorne, Lachlan Preston and Hunter Dever in the side’s 24-10 victory over the Denman Devils.

A double to Dave Murnane, and tries to Cameron French and Harry Douglass, allowed the team to hold an 18-6 advantage at the interval.

Denman’s points came from rep player Brady Benkovic.

One setback, however, was the dismissal of Thorne for striking in the 27th minute.

But, despite being a man down, the Tigers displayed plenty of class.

Captain-coach and players’ player Daniel Hoogerwerf led from the front and was ably supported by forwards Samuel Fitzsimmons and Adam Swadling.

The Muswellbrook Rams enjoyed the bye.
