Green Caffeen is reducing waste in Cessnock

SHARE

Cessnock City Council is encouraging local businesses to sign up to a new initiative to help reduce disposable coffee cup waste in the LGA.

The organisation recently teamed up with Green Caffeen, a free reusable system for eco-focused cafes and coffee-lovers across the nation.

The scheme works just like swap-and-go gas bottles but with Australian made coffee cups instead.

Already, Cessnock businesses – Greg’s Espresso Bar, MR O Kitchen Espresso Grocer, The Coffee Emporium – and Kurri Kurri’s Happi Chicken are participating in the campaign.

“Reducing waste is something we all can do,” Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal said.

“Most takeaway coffee cups aren’t recyclable because of their plastic lining.

“In Australia, more than one billion disposable coffee cups end up in landfill and our oceans each year.

“By signing up to Green Caffeen, coffee-loving residents of the Cessnock LGA can help reduce landfill to protect our natural environment.

“This scheme is great for anyone who forgets to bring their own keep-cups along each time they go to get a takeaway coffee.”

Coffee-lovers are required to download the Green Caffeen app and sign up.

Then all they need to do is scan their Green Caffeen cup before they take it away, and then scan it back in next time they are in a participating café.
