GoFundMe page set up to assist teen injured in Lake Mac bus crash

The sister of a teen seriously injured in a bus crash at Lake Macquarie at the weekend has established a GoFundMe page to “get his life back to normal”.

Emergency services were called to Wommara Avenue, Belmont North, just after 3.45am on Sunday 13 November, after the vehicle – travelling westbound – hit a concrete barrier.

It then overturned onto its side into a ditch.

Passers-by stopped to help passengers out of the vehicle with NSW Ambulance paramedics arriving on scene a short time later.

Two men – who had been ejected – were trapped underneath the bus.

They were treated by paramedics with one airlifted to Royal North Hospital suffering spinal injuries and the second taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Belmont’s Hayley Nelson set up the GoFundMe campaign, with a target of $2,000, to assist her brother Jayden, who sustained five broken ribs, a punctured lung and chipped vertebrae.

“It was a freak accident,” she said.

“Jay’s pretty sore but thankful to be alive.

“I’m now looking to raise funds for his post recovery.

“Everything is still quite unknown in the way of any form of compensation from what has occurred.”

Ms Nelson admitted her sibling’s immediate future was “uncertain”.

“There is going to be physio and, potentially, other medical appointments Jay will need to attend,” she said.

“However, we’d just like him to get his life back to normal.

“If anyone is able to provide any financial support, Jay, my family and I would be forever grateful.”

Three other people with minor cuts and abrasions were also conveyed to hospital, with the remaining two uninjured.

The bus driver, a 61-year-old man, was taken to hospital where he underwent mandatory testing.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
