Glendale Technology High students, staff expected to return next week

Students and staff at Glendale Technology High are expected to return next week after a devastating fire ripped through their school on Monday morning.

As investigations continue into the cause of the blaze, principal Anthony Angel advised pupils, teachers and visitors to stay away from the Oakland Street premises until Tuesday 28 April.

“We must wait for both an independent hygienist and structural engineer’s report to make the site safe and allow for the completion of all necessary work,” he said.

“While the clean-up progresses, the school will remain non-operational.

“It means no-one is allowed on site.

“Students can continue their education via the Learning Remotely procedures on Wednesday 22 April, Thursday 23 April and Friday 24 April.

“I thank everyone for their patience.”

Emergency services, including 20 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) trucks and more than 100 personnel, attended the blaze just after 1am on 20 April.

On arrival, they found the two-storey building up in flames.

The crews then spent a significant amount of time containing the fire, while protecting any neighbouring structures.

Now, with the Anzac Day long weekend also looming, Mr Angel said he expected regular lessons to resume next Tuesday.

“As a number of buildings will remain out of use due to the fire, some rearrangement of our timetable and rooms will be necessary,” he explained.

“I understand the teaching and learning situation forced upon our school will create challenges for some of our families, for which I apologise.

“However, work is progressing as quickly as possible to allow for the safe return to school for all our students and staff.

“Any associated changes will be communicated to parents/carers on Monday 27 April.”
