Gillieston Heights will soon be home to a new skate park and playspace, with construction starting this week.
The $927,000 facility, funded by Maitland City Council and the NSW Government’s Places to Play program, is being built next to Roy Jordan Oval.
And, in a coup for local skaters, the park includes a flow bowl featuring a key-hole transition, waterfall to a deep bowl, transition extensions and a mogul.
Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said it would be a “fantastic addition” to Gillieston Heights.
“Two design options were put to the community earlier this year, with a resounding 90% of voters supporting the flow bowl style,” he explained.
“It will cater to everyone from beginners to more advanced levels.
“And, because it’s located right next to the sport facility and playspace, it means residents will have great recreation opportunities at their doorstep.”
Meanwhile, the existing playspace at Roy Jordan Oval will be upgraded to include nature and water play elements such as a manual water pump, while accessible footpaths, picnic tables, shade structures and other supporting infrastructure will also be added.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the NSW Government was delighted to contribute $500,000 towards the project.
“This new skate park and upgraded playspace at Roy Jordan Oval will greatly benefit the local community and provide a meeting place for people of all ages,” he stated.
“It’s just another great example of the NSW Government continuing to deliver high-quality, vibrant public open spaces with long-lasting benefits for locals and visitors alike.”
Work is expected to be completed just in time for Christmas.
