Gavin’s ready for role behind the news desk

When Hunter residents tune into NBN News on Monday night, the line up is going to look a little different.

Gavin Morris is returning to the team after a few weeks of paternity leave and will join Natasha Beyersdorf behind the desk to deliver the bulletin.

The well-known local will continue to present his weather report but he’ll also read the news and throw to reporters out in the field.

While it’s tinged with a bit of sadness because of Paul Lobb’s shock departure, Gavin says he’s ready to take on the new role.

“I’m really excited, it’s completely unexpected, I did not see that this was coming whatsoever but it kind of feels a little bit like home for me,” he said.

“And, working with Tash, I am so excited about that.

“I was trying to think when we first worked together and it was a fair way ago in the 90s.

“We hosted Carols by Candlelight down at Speers Point Park one year and we’ve just always had a great rapport on stage and obviously we’ve had our crossovers in the studio before.

“I have a huge amount of admiration for Tash, so I am incredibly excited and proud to be alongside her.”

When it comes to his new job, Gavin said there were lots of mixed emotions.

“It was all very surreal, it was almost an out of body experience the whole process and the hurt, you know, Lobby is my mate,” he said.

“We have this connection and this affinity, I probably interacted with Lobby in the newsroom more than anyone else, he sat near me – it’s a tough feeling.

“You get this job that is supposed to be great but one of your close workmates and someone that you admire is going through what they’re going through and it’s very confusing.

“As I said to Lobby just the other day, I will never know really what to say.”

General manager of Nine NBN NNSW Jenny Webber believes Gavin and Natasha will complement the studio’s “local, talented and dedicated team”.

“Our focus is to bring our loyal viewers the very latest in local news, sport and weather and provide a premium one-hour news bulletin seven days per week,” she said.

“Access to Nine’s resources locally, nationally and internationally will position us to cross live to the heartland of stories as they break.”
