Gallery’s journey from the ashes

SHARE

Finite Gallery was only ever supposed to be just that – finite.

Six years ago, artist Leslie Duffin set up shop in a derelict petrol station at Caves Beach to offer art classes and, potentially, a gallery.

In the early years, the gallery relied on extension leads and buckets of water. All the windows were boarded up.

It was idyllic in fine weather but faced challenges in the colder months.

Despite the difficulties, Finite Gallery became a regular stop for locals and visitors to the seaside hamlet.

The Kiss My Arts fundraisers for MS Australia were well supported, as were the workshops and classes for both children and adults.

However, in June 2015 came the inevitable news of the site’s imminent redevelopment.

Duffin despaired that she would have to find a new location for the gallery, when two visitors offered her the opportunity to move into the commercial space they had bought across the road.

“It was a ‘pinch yourself’ moment,” Duffin said.

She eagerly signed a lease and couldn’t wait to have access to running water, power and air conditioning!

Finite Gallery reopened that September, and since then, the number of classes and workshops on offer has increased.

Former Newcastle Art School head teacher and prize-winning artist, John Morris, tutors an adult painting class each Tuesday morning, while Duffin holds a beginners’ painting class on Tuesday evenings.

Visiting specialist tutors conduct weekend workshops and classes in photography, painting, drawing, colour, print-making and much more.

You can even have an Arty Party at the gallery, where groups of all ages can participate in an art activity and take home a finished product.

The bright, open gallery space exhibits an ever-changing variety of work from the region’s top artists and artisans.

Finite Gallery is located at 60 Caves Beach Road, Caves Beach. Phone 0419 471 660 or visit finitegallery.com
