Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) will throw its support behind the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) during its representative round this weekend.

The Hunter-based organisation’s popular Beanie for Brain Cancer NRL fixtures proved a massive windfall for the MHF, amassing more than $4.1 million with in excess of 160,000 head warmers sold between Thursday (17 June) and Sunday (20 June).

Now, the Real NRL is hoping to add to that tally when the Newcastle Rebels tackle Canberra at the Maitland Sportsground on Saturday 26 June.

“Entry to the venue will be way of a donation, with all proceeds going to the Mark Hughes Foundation,” CEO Charlie Haggett said.

“We’ll also sell MHF beanies on the day to assist with further fundraising for them.

“Newcastle Rugby League is proud to be associated with the Mark Hughes Foundation.

“We see these matches as an opportunity to showcase some of the best players in the area and, at the same time, make a contribution to a very important cause.

“We’d like to encourage people to come along for some great rugby league entertainment.

“Canteen and bar facilities will be available, too.”

The Rebels tasted success in both juniors and seniors, in the Steel City Challenge against the Illawarra Steelers, last month.

The Adam Hall-mentored under-20s held off a late comeback to secure a 26-22 victory, while the Aaron Watts-coached open men’s squad scored a comfortable 36-4 triumph.

“The teams did really well in May – and we are keen to keep that record intact,” Haggett said.

“But, we’ve also arranged for two under-17 first division games to be played beforehand.

“It should be a great day of rugby league action.”

Maitland and Lakes United will kick off the weekend program at 11am, followed by Wests and Cessnock at 12.15pm.

The Rebels under-20s then lock horns with Canberra at 1.30pm, with the seniors taking the field from 3pm.

On Sunday 27 June, two postponed games from round one of the Real NRL are scheduled.

The Bulldogs will host competition leaders Maitland at the Kurri Kurri Sportsground, and Lakes United faces Western Suburbs at Cahill Oval.
