The anticipation is building among the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) fraternity about what lays ahead in 2022.

Following last year’s disappointment, which saw COVID-19 derail the competition on the eve of the play-offs, everyone has their fingers crossed for a return to normality – and some breathtaking action on the paddock.

Officials, coaches, committee members and players – with a special guest or two – descended upon McDonald Jones Stadium on Wednesday night to launch the upcoming season.

“I know I can’t wait,” Real NRL chairman John Crooks said.

“And, to be honest, I think everyone feels the same way.

“There are some exciting things in the pipeline, too.

“But, let’s get through round one first.

“We’ve got some cracking matches kicking off this weekend.

“On Saturday, we have the Central Coast derby between the Wyong Roos and The Entrance Tigers, 2020 premiers Cessnock Goannas locking horns with the Western Suburbs Rosellas, the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs hosting a new-look Lakes United Seagulls, and the Macquarie Scorpions facing the South Newcastle Lions.

“The match of the round, however, pits the Central Newcastle Butcher Boys against the Maitland Pickers on Sunday afternoon.

“It appears, early on, that this could be one of the closest seasons in years.”

Another added incentive for the clubs in 2022 is the chance to contest the Real NRL grand final at McDonald Jones Stadium, the home of the Newcastle Knights.

“We’ve signed a five-year deal to play the decider there,” Crooks said.

“It was due to come into effect last season but, with what occurred, that agreement will begin from 2022.

“I’m sure the venue will provide an amazing atmosphere for players and supporters alike.”
