GALLERY: Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club members continue to excel at state level

Despite the cancellation of several weekly racing events, Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club members have still excelled at NSW and Australian level.

Several riders showcased their skills at the U15, U17 and Masters AusCycling NSW State Criterium Championships in Sutherland.

Ben Neppl continued his dominance in the men’s MMAS4 age division, finishing across the line in top spot.

This follows on from his gold medal performance at the recent State Road Championships.

Rod Price also remains unstoppable in the MMAS10 category, winning his third NSW medal in as many weeks, placing second in the criterium.

Craig Burne, contesting the MMAS5, fought hard halfway through his race to lead the chase group back to the main peloton.

With three laps remaining, the cat and mouse games began.

Eventually, Burne finished a very credible 11th, just 10 seconds behind the placegetters.

Meanwhile, the club’s juniors are continuing to impress and gain experience.

Port Stephens’ Phoenix Julian snared her inaugural state medal, after winning bronze in the U17 women’s criterium.

She only joined the organisation a year ago after making the switch from hockey.

Noah Mason collected fourth in the U17 men’s, Hayley Dell took out fourth and Caitlin sixth in the U15 women’s race.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a stop to the 2021 Masters Track Championships in Brisbane earlier this year.

However, this week, AusCycling listed the national champions for the 2021 track season.

Medal winners were awarded based on performance times at each of the relevant state and official-timed competitions conducted around the country.

Once again, the Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club made the medal list:

  • Rod Price – MMAS10: Gold – flying 200m, Gold – individual pursuit, Bronze – time trial
  • Johnathan Millington – MMAS2: Silver – time Trial, Silver – individual pursuit

Cycling club officials are hoping the rain clears for the running of the annual Murray Walker Memorial Handicap this Sunday at HEZ, Kurri Kurri.
