Newcastle Rugby League (NEWRL) has confirmed Maitland Sportsground as the host venue for the 2026 Magic Round.

The blockbuster event is set for Saturday 11 April, kicking off the highly-anticipated season.

It will be the third staging of Magic Round and, once again, doubles as the opener for the Denton Engineering Cup, bringing all 10 premiership clubs together for a full day of football at one of the region’s premier sporting locations and home to reigning premiers Maitland.

Ironically, the Pickers drew the bye for the 2025 edition at Newcastle’s No. 1 Sportsground.

NEWRL general manager Adam Devcich said the move to Maitland continued to elevate the event’s profile while giving fans a rare chance to see every club in action on the same day.

It comes as the competition reverts to a 10-team format following Wyong’s decision to return to the Central Coast.

A FIVE-GAME SHOWCASE TO OPEN THE SEASON

The 2026 schedule features five matches, beginning with a clash between 2025 semi-finalists The Entrance and Western Suburbs at 11.30am.

Much has been made of the Rosellas’ recruitment under new coach Adam Bettridge, while the Tigers have added to their 2026 roster with some handy inclusions as they look to better their fifth-place finish in 2025.

Kurri Kurri, coming off an improved campaign under Paul Stringer, will face Central Newcastle, with rookie coach Lucas Miller ready to show what he can do in his first year steering the ship at Denton Engineering Cup level.

Maitland headlines the mid-afternoon fixture when it meets the Macquarie Scorpions at 2.50pm.

The Pickers will be keen to open their account in front of their home fans, while Macquarie – entering their third campaign under Jye Bailey – is equally-determined to build momentum after some positive signs last season.

South Newcastle, perhaps with a side rumoured to include Lachlan Fitzgibbon, will take on 2025 grand finalists Cessnock in one of the day’s marquee contests.

The Lions have recruited well in the off-season, while the Goannas were just 80 minutes from glory.

The Northern Hawks will then close out the program against Lakes United at 6.10pm in mentor Steve Simpson’s first match at the helm.

Lakes United will manage the weight of expectation, with the Hawks not registering a win in 2025; the Seagulls will go into the contest as heavy favourites.

A MAJOR EVENT FOR MAITLAND

In a planning masterstroke, Maitland City Council will partner with NEWRL to deliver the event, with organisers expecting a strong crowd and a festival-like atmosphere featuring food vendors and family activities alongside the on-field action.

Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said the city was proud to host one of the competition’s showcase events.

He also praised Newcastle Rugby League’s support for a boutique stadium within the region at Wednesday’s media conference.

“Maitland Regional Sportsground is an iconic venue with a rich history spanning more than 80 years,” Cr Penfold said.

“Events like Magic Round showcase our facilities and bring players, families, fans and visitors to Maitland, the heart of the Hunter, celebrating sport and community in a welcoming, family-friendly city proud of its heritage.”

NRL’S LOCAL SHOWPIECE GROWS AGAIN

Devcich said Magic Round had quickly become a signature fixture on the calendar.

“It’s one of the most anticipated events of the season,” he stated.

“Hosting it at Maitland Sportsground – one of the best rugby league venues in the region – adds something special for players, families and fans alike.

“With five exciting match-ups, food vendors and family activities, supporters can expect high-quality football and a great event.”

Devcich thanked his member clubs for sacrificing some home fixtures for the greater good of the game.

The remainder of the NEWRL draw will drop next week, with lower grades and the Milleen Group Women’s Premiership expected to be released in early 2026.
