Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club (NHCC) members have stolen the show at the Auscycling NSW Junior State Track Championships at the Dunc Gray Velodrome at the weekend.

The youngsters returned home from the Sydney circuit with a terrific swag of nine medals, including four gold, two silver and three bronze.

“It’s a great result for the organisation,” NHCC president Justin Rose said.

“The kids – and their mentors – have worked extremely hard, so the medal haul was just reward for their efforts.

“All of them are members of the Hunter Academy of Sport cycling team, too, which is coached by Ross Hayter.

“So, we’re really building a strong junior base at NHCC.

“The future of the club is in terrific hands.”

The stand-out, however, was East Maitland’s Noah Mason.

The talented 15-year-old won four events – the under-17 men’s 500m time trial, scratch, Keirin and sprint – and collected third in the points race.

He then teamed up with Matthew Drohan and Jake Pajtl to snare bronze in the under-17 men’s team sprint.

Mason will now represent NSW at the 2022 National Track Championships at Brisbane this month.

“Noah’s selection in the state squad is even more special, as he was not able to compete at last year’s Australian titles due to a broken collarbone he suffered from a bike accident,” Rose said.

“We’re all aware of his goal to make the NSW Institute of Sport cycling team.

“The rest of the members will now have a well-earned break before training returns ahead of the state road season.”

The Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club’s female contingent, in the same age category, also enjoyed success.

Caitlin Rose, Phoenix Julian and Hayley Dell took out silver in the under-17 women’s team sprint and backed up with another second in the team pursuit.

Merewether’s Liam Wilson made his track debut at the velodrome as well.

The former mountain-biker contested the strong under-19 men’s division and picked up a bronze in the sprint category.

Anderson Dell gained experience and registered PBs (personal best times), too, as a first year under-15 rider.

“We couldn’t be happier with the overall outcome, since we have a sub-standard velodrome in Newcastle,” Rose said.

“The Adamstown facility is in dire need of repairs and lighting.

“Over the past month, our juniors have travelled to Bass Hill every Thursday evening (for training) at the Dunc Gray indoor centre in the lead-up to the state event.

“The fact that we have many junior, elite and masters NSW champions in Newcastle is amazing considering our poor amenities.”
