More than 30 players showcased their skills and technical nous during the Hunter Challenge Croquet Golf Doubles at Toronto this week.

The division three section of the tournament, which took place on Tuesday 13 April, is primarily aimed at participants who boast a handicap of nine and over.

In the end, it was a tightly-contested competition.

Sue Butler and Jan Allen joined forces to secure Block A, ahead of runners up Peter Saunders and Kevin Davies.

In Block B, the Lonergans – Tony and Jan – proved too crafty for Robert Creswick and Leone Robertson.

Barry Elliott and Ian Spight claimed the honours in Block C from hometown duo Liz and Phil McDonald.

The players were divided into three blocks of five pairs, ensuring at least four games in the round robin format.

The teams who scored the most number of hoops overall were declared the winners.

Toronto Croquet Club publicity officer Liz McDonald said the organisation was proud to host the event.

“We had competitors from throughout the Hunter,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“There were entries from Cessnock, Maitland, Nelson Bay, Bateau Bay, Pelican and, of course, Toronto.

“Luckily, we turned on the beautiful weather for everyone.

“It was a terrific social day for all the Hunter clubs – and, even better, played in great spirits.”
