Why should Sydney get all the funding?
If you’re a business owner hoping to host an event in Newcastle in 2023, you might want to check out the NSW Government’s Accelerate funding program and get a $60,000 boost.
With less than a fortnight to go before applications close, the funding is available to organisers planning to host conferences, conventions, seminars, training courses and trade exhibitions and can be used toward venue hire, catering and/or audio-visual expenses.
The Accelerate Business Events Fund is designed to stimulate the return of business events through matched funding for business events held between 1 January and 30 November 2023.
Applicants can be based anywhere in the country, as long as their business event takes place over at least one full day in an eligible venue in Greater Sydney, Newcastle or Wollongong.
By hosting business events, tourism is also expected to return to the City of Newcastle, something the council is passionate about.
“Quite simply, Newcastle is an events city,” Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said.
“We’ve demonstrated that the past few years.
“Even as we come out of COVID, the ability for the city to put on extraordinary events is really pleasing.”
His comments followed the announcement that music icon Elton John would bring his Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour concert to McDonald Jones Stadium in January (2023), followed by the 2022 FOX Australian Supercross Championship in November.
NSW Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin says the program has invested millions in the business sector since its inception.
“We know business events contribute significantly to the wider tourism industry and this important investment will have a wide-reaching impact for years to come both socially and economically,” he said.
The funding is “first come, first served”.
Applications for round three of Accelerate open close on 30 September.
The Accelerate Sydney Business Event Fund is part of the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Package announced by the NSW Government in October 2021 and is administered by Business Events Sydney (BESydney) in conjunction with Destination NSW.
