In a major win for the Medowie community, planning approval has been granted for a new high school, with construction due to start in September.
It follows the release this week of artist impressions of the facility, to be located at 6 Abundance Road.
The eagerly-awaited structure – set to welcome its first cohort of students on day one, Term 1, 2027 – will feature modern classrooms, including spaces for specialist support classes; purpose-built workshops and laboratories; multipurpose hall, library and administrative facilities; and outdoor play and sports areas.
The school’s also slated to provide essential education infrastructure for the growing community, according to Port Stephens MP Kate Washington.
“This is a huge moment for Medowie,” she said.
“We’ve fought for a public high school for decades… and, now, it’s finally happening.
“For years, Medowie’s families have been forced to send their kids out of town.
“But, that’s about to change.
“This school will transform our town and children’s lives.
“It’s about keeping our kids connected to their community and giving them the opportunities they deserve, right here at home.”
The Medowie venture is one of many being delivered in the Hunter to accommodate an expanding population.
Hunter River High and Irrawang High recently underwent enhancements.
Redevelopments at Newcastle High and Gillieston Public are also underway, as well as planning and design for educational facilities at Huntlee.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said the state government would deliver $2.1 billion over four years for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW.
“We’re committed to provide world-class education facilities in fast-growing communities… and this is crystal clear in the Hunter region,” she said.
“Our government, with the advocacy of Deputy Premier Prue Car and Kate Washington, is backing the families of Medowie by delivering them the high school they’ve fought so long for, even when the Liberals and Nationals said that a local public high school was not needed.
“With Medowie’s population expected to swell significantly, this project is a critical step in ensuring every child has access to a quality public education where they live.”
