Those who love everything about Steamfest are in for a real treat when the popular locomotive extravaganza pulls into Maitland next year.
In a coup for the region, the annual event is set to host the National Historical Machinery Association (NHMA) National Rally, with a bumper week-long schedule of activities and experiences expected to attract large crowds to the city.
It’ll open the nine-day program on 10-11 April 2027, leading into Steamfest on 17-18 April.
Maitland City councillor Ken Jordan highlighted the importance of council’s involvement.
“We’re proud to support this national event, which celebrates the incredible history of steam and antique machinery,” the Steamfest Working Group chair said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase Maitland, the heart of the Hunter, to enthusiasts from across Australia, bringing the community together for a vibrant celebration, and creating lasting cultural and economic benefits.”
The event will also mark the 20th Biennial National Rally, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest.
It’s also set to create a major national celebration of heritage machinery that’s expected to inject $3.2 million into the economy.
For locals and visitors alike, it promises to be a feast of sights and sounds, with steam engines, vintage tractors and antique farm machinery sharing centre stage with heritage train rides, show-and-shine displays, family activities and plenty of food and entertainment.
The scale of the event is anticipated to give Maitland a serious financial lift, with about 70,000 people tipped to attend across the nine days and accommodation throughout the city likely to book out.
Maitland Steam and Antique Machinery Association (MSAMA) president Bill Waddell and his counterpart at the Hunter Valley Vintage Farm Machinery Association, Bill Onley, admitted the clubs were thrilled to be joining together in partnership to host the rally.
“We’re excited to bring it to Maitland, creating a week-long celebration that showcases the very best of steam and antique machinery for collectors, enthusiasts and families alike,” the pair explained.
“With the support of Maitland City Council, we’re looking forward to delivering a truly memorable experience, delivering a diverse and engaging program.”
NHMA president Peter Garnham noted the significance of the rally coming to Maitland.
“It’s a highlight for steam and antique machinery lovers nationwide,” he said.
“Maitland, with its rich history and strong local support, is the perfect location to make the 2027 National Rally a milestone event.”
