I’m sure a lot of readers will have seen some interesting sights over the past few weeks.
From casual brawls in supermarkets over the humble toilet paper, to selfish individuals hoarding enough food and essentials to last a lifetime, these are strange and stressful times.
There have been a few memes and comments on social media about how the community managed to come together during the bushfires but now it’s seemingly everyone for themselves.
It’s hard to argue with this sentiment.
However, there are a few positives already coming out – one being the uptake in sales for some small businesses.
Hot on the heels of the Great Toilet Paper Debacle, the meat and mince section in supermarkets now looks like a swarm of locusts tore through it, resulting in more business for some local butchers. I also had a nice chat with a random stranger in front of the empty hand sanitiser shelf about COVID-19, the state of the economy, and Donald Trump.
I feel sorry for event organisers and volunteers, many of whom spent countless hours working behind the scenes, only to be forced to cancel at the last minute. However, it is, of course, the sensible decision in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Our ‘What’s On’ section – on page 26 – has been transformed into a ‘What’s Not On’ in order to keep you up to date with rapidly-changing decisions.
Stay safe out there.
