Free: University of Newcastle offering refunds

SHARE

University of Newcastle students have been offered a reprieve.

In what can be perceived as a goodwill gesture, scholars at the city’s largest tertiary education provider will be given a refund on unused parking costs accrued this semester.

The three-month refund applies to permits servicing July to September.

In its communications with its Callaghan campus students, dated Thursday 14 October, the educator offered its locked-out learners a welcome surprise.

“As you have not had a chance to use your permit like you normally would, all students who purchased a 2021 permit will automatically be refunded three months of your permit ($40.95) into the account used to make the purchase.

“You don’t have to do anything to get the refund, but if you haven’t received it by 30 November you should get in touch with us.”

Students returning to campus were told their parking permit remained valid.

“If you’ve been approved to come back onto campus, don’t worry – you can still use your permit.”

The refund is being offered to University of Newcastle students who study at the Callaghan campus, and who purchased a parking permit after 1 July.

“We know with COVID-19 restrictions you might not have had a chance to use it like you normally would, so we’re automatically refunding three months of your permit back into your account.

“Please note – this only applies to student parking permits, not residential parking permits.”

Annual parking permits at the university currently cost $163.80.

The permits do not guarantee a parking bay but rather are touted as saving students from the need to “find change or stop and pay at a ticket machine”.

Parking fees apply Monday to Friday between 8am and 5.30pm.

At all other times, parking is free.

The University of Newcastle will also be applying the three-month refund to yearly permits for that period of time.
