A Newcastle man in his 90s has died overnight after contracting COVID-19 from an outbreak at a retirement village in Edgeworth.

NSW Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Marianne Gale confirmed the news on Friday morning.

“We are very sad to be notified [about two deaths],” she said.

“The first is a man in his late 90s from Newcastle who died at Hawkins Masonic Village in Edgeworth, he acquired his infection recently as part of the outbreak in the facility.

“He had received two doses of the vaccine and our heartfelt sympathies go out to that family at this time.”

The second death was a woman in her 40s who died at home in Southwest Sydney. She was a close contact of another confirmed case.

It comes as the Hunter recorded four new infections in the region.

Hunter New England Health confirmed one of the cases was in Lake Macquarie, one was detected in Newcastle, another in Maitland and one was in Port Stephens.

The Armidale local government area also recorded one case.

All of the new infections are linked to previously reported cases, bringing the total number to 82 since 5 August.

NSW as a whole recorded 390 new cases, with 58 infectious in the community.

It remains vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact of a person with COVID-19, isolates and is tested immediately.

“With this delta variant we are seeing a large number of young adults being affected by COVID-19,” Dr Gale said.

“I just want to particularly encourage younger adults in our community to please take the stay-at-home orders as seriously as you possibly can.”
