Newcastle has tragically recorded another COVID-19 related death after a man in his 80s passed away with the virus.

Sadly, he is just one of four losses reported in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) after another three males in their 80s and 90s from Tamworth, Inverell and the Mid Coast died.

It comes as the district detected 3,184 new cases overnight – it’s a jump of more than 500 in comparison to yesterday’s 2,654.

Sixty-three people remain in local hospitals, five are in intensive care.

Overall, NSW reported 25,235 new infections and the deaths of 15 people – 11 men and four women aged in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Of the 13 people who died over the age of 65, four people had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, seven people had received two doses, one person had received one dose, and one person was unvaccinated.

Of the two people who died under the age of 65, one person had received two doses, and one person was unvaccinated. Both people had significant underlying health conditions.

There are currently 1,301 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 46 people in intensive care, 14 of whom require ventilation.

Across NSW, more than 95% of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 94.6% have received two doses.

Of children aged 12 to 15, 79.4% have received two doses and of children aged 5 to 11, 25.1% are double jabbed.
