Four deaths, 1,825 new COVID cases in HNELHD

The Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) has tragically recorded another four COVID-19 related deaths.

Four men, aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s, from Newcastle (two), Port Stephens and the Mid Coast passed away with the virus.

It comes as case numbers continue to drop after 1,825 new infections were reported overnight.

It includes 1,110 positive PCR results and 715 RATs.

In the district there are 94 people in hospital, five are in ICU.

Across the state 20,324 new infections were detected, 13,620 were positive PCR results.

NSW also recorded the deaths of 34 people – 26 men and eight women.

One person was in their 40s, five people were aged in their 50s, five were in their 60s, nine people were in their 70s, 10 were in their 80s and four people were aged in their 90s.

Two people had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, 23 had received two doses, three people had received one dose and six people were not vaccinated.

Hospitalisations dropped from 2,762 to 2,712 as did the number of people in ICU, it now sits at 189 people, 72 of whom require ventilation.

NSW Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell has also released a plan for when school resumes next week.

Rapid antigen tests will be provided to all staff and students by their schools.

Tests will also be given to early childhood educators, they will receive two each week for the next four weeks.

All primary and secondary school teachers will have to wear surgical masks indoors as will high school students.

Masks are also strongly encouraged in outdoor settings and for primary school students while they are indoors.
