Hard-working organisers have hailed the second annual Sleap Walk a huge success after it raised more than $20,000 last month.
At least 200 people strolled around Newcastle’s East End on 15 November to amass funds for Sleapy’s Foundation’s pet project, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Courtyard – and garden – at the John Hunter Hospital.
The space is being designed to provide comfort and respite for critically-ill children, aged 0 to 16 years, and their families when they need it most.
“The team can’t thank all the participants, who donned their PJs, enough,” Peter Sleap said.
“You brought the energy, colour and heart, which makes this event so special.
“And, with your assistance, we’ve taken another important step toward ensuring the new PICU courtyard will be cared for well into the future.
“We’re blown away to know more than $20,000 was raised through Sleap Walk.
“Every donation, big and small, will play a part in creating something meaningful for families in our region.
“The PICU can be a daunting place.
“But, with everyone’s support, we’re determined to maintain a peaceful outdoor retreat where everyone can find moments of calm during difficult times.
“From equipment to seasonal upkeep, your contributions will help keep this sanctuary a safe and soothing locale for years to come.
“We can’t wait until it’s finished.”
While the fun of Sleap Walk may have ended, there is still time to aid the charity’s fundraising efforts.

“Just because we’re building the project, it won’t be the end of our involvement with PICU,” the man known as Sleapy said.
“We’ll continue our partnership as long as I’m alive.
“That’s what Sleapy’s Foundation is all about.”
