Foran guides Tigers to emphatic win over Knights

SHARE

The Greater Northern Tigers disregarded a short preparation to vanquish Newcastle Maitland Region Knights 48-10 in a first round Country Championship match at North Tamworth’s Jack Woolaston Oval at the weekend.

The Tigers led 28-6 at half-time and continued on with the job in the second period for a morale-boosting win at home.

Greater Northern coach Brad McManus was ecstatic with a side that had enjoyed just three training sessions together (two in Tamworth and one in Scone).

“I was really happy with that,” he said afterwards.

“Really happy with the way things turned out after we hadn’t been together for all that long.

“We did have a fair bit of experience there with Liam Foran, Blanchie (Scott Blanch), Mitch (Doring) and Bailey (Taylor).

“And, we’ve also got some good young kids up front, too.

“Brett Jarrett was great in there as well.”

It was a big day for Jarrett after he coached the Tigers under-16s to their third win of their Country Championship competition.

“He’s a good footballer,” McManus said of the Dungowan Cowboy back-rower.

“But, our spine was really good today.

“Blanchie at 9, Mitch (7), Liam (6) and Bailey (1).

“They steered us around well.

“It was a good team performance.

“A real good effort but we will have to be better next week against Western, that will be a lot tougher challenge.”

The Tigers under-16s continued their push for an Andrew Johns Cup finals berth with a determined four-point victory, 14-10, over the Knights.

It was better news for Newcastle Maitland Region in the other clashes.

In the women’s Country Championship showdown, the Knights handed out a league lesson to the Tigers, prevailing 30-4.

And, in the Laurie Daley Cup fixture, Newcastle Maitland Region ran away with the clash to the tune of 34-6.

Talented youngster Bailey Scholes grabbed a hat-trick, with tries at the 32nd, 44th and 63rd minutes.

He was ably supported by Justin Norris, Beau Watson, Ned Jennings and Taj Blackman, who also dived over.
