Five local bands making noise heading into 2026

SHARE

Newcastle’s music scene continues to prove it punches above its weight, with a new wave of local bands gaining momentum ahead of 2026.

From packed inner-city venues to growing interstate attention, these acts are beginning to make their mark beyond the Hunter.

Here are five Newcastle bands to keep firmly on your radar as the new year approaches.

Trophy Wyfe

Despite only being in high school, Trophy Wyfe has exploded onto the local music scene in 2025, quickly becoming a favourite.

The dynamic three-piece describes itself as indie rock and post punk, which is very fitting.

Their unique rhythmic, yet brooding sound is growing increasingly popular, reminiscent of other rising Australian acts, such as Twine, Radio Free Alice, and local legends Dust.

With a debut album, titled No One’s Listening, already under their belt, Trophy Wyfe is set to be the next big thing.

Mishayla

For all those who love pop and R&B, meet Mishayla.

For the past few years, she’s been working hard to build up her name in the local scene, but with the release of her recent EP sincerely, she’s really made herself known.

Her personal lyricism and unforgettable hooks match perfectly with her girly-pop personality which is evident from the moment you hit play.

Her sound and visual aesthetic is quintessential of classic 90s pop artists but reconfigured to fit the modern social narrative.

Horse

Post punk is back in a big way with these rising stars, Horse.

Formed from the merging of several local projects, this five-piece has been the talk of the sound since the release of its first single BLIGHT.

The drone-y yet enticing track features a medley of perfectly layered instrumentals and poignant vocals, leaving you unsure whether to start a mosh, cry or dance along.

In November, the band opened Triple J’s 50th anniversary show at King Street in Newcastle, putting them on the radar of all listeners of the radio giant.

Ponzi Scheme

Ponzi Scheme is bringing the party back to the Steel City.

Featuring members of 12-piece funk group Saylor & The Flavor, Ponzi Scheme has delivered a whole new sound to Newcastle, melding elements of goth and industrial with pop and EDM.

Their debut single Nightcrawler voices the concerns of many Novocastrians around the early closure of most venues, with an almost extraterrestrial sound leading you through the track.

If you’re looking for a fun show where you can let loose and dance, we would definitely recommend checking out Ponzi Scheme.

Feel The Pain

It would be a crime not to highlight the powerhouse that is the local hardcore scene, with Feel The Pain leading the charge.

FTP is bringing back the classic sounds of old school hardcore punk rock, with unreal beatdowns and powerful vocals.

While hardcore might not be to everyone’s taste, FTP’s recent EP WORLD IN TWO is the perfect introduction to the genre, with catchy tracks like THE MESSAGE and HEART TO HEART.

Coming off a national tour with hardcore heavy hitters SPEED, they’re definitely a band worth keeping an eye on in 2026.
