Five new cases in the Hunter, all infectious in community

SHARE

Five new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Maitland local government areas.

Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) confirmed the cases were in Cardiff, Macquarie Hills, Toronto, Nelson Bay and Chisholm and they were all infectious in the community.

All detections excluding the Macquarie Hills infection are linked to known exposure sites or family clusters. Investigations are underway into the unlinked case.

There are currently 105 active cases in the district, with eight people requiring care in hospital.

HNELHD’s Dr David Durrheim said the region must remain vigilant and follow all of the rules.

“As many recently announced cases were still moving about in the community while they were infectious, it is crucial that we all continue to be vigilant with mask wearing, hand hygiene, QR codes, social distancing and all the current stay at home lockdown rules,” he said.

“Now is not the time for complacency and we must all do our part.

“Please get tested if you have even the mildest of symptoms, and get vaccinated as soon as you have the opportunity to do so.”

1,281 new infections were detected in NSW, with 177 cases in intensive care.

Sadly, another five deaths also occurred yesterday. They include a man in his 90s, two women in their 80s, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said government modelling showed COVID-19 case numbers would peak in about a week’s time, with hospitalisations peaking in October.
