Fitzgibbons, Ribeiro win Surfest

Sally Fitzgibbons and Alex Ribeiro battled through a huge field of surfers to claim victory in the 34th annual Surfest in Newcastle at the weekend.

Fitzgibbons joined the likes of Mick Fanning, Pam Burridge and Rebecca Woods as a three-time Surfest champion.

The world number six beat fellow Australian, Isabella Nichols, who was appearing in her first QS6000 final, to lift the Holmes Civil Developments Pro trophy at Merewether Beach.

Fitzgibbons had just recovered from a fractured shoulder and overcame several niggling injuries during the week, which nearly saw her pull out of the event.

In the men’s Burton Automotive Pro final, Ribeiro took on fellow Brazilian, Jadson Andre, who was fresh off a win at the recent QS6000 in his home country.

Andre posted excellent scores throughout finals day but had a premonition that he would make it to the decider, only to fall at the last hurdle.

“I have been trying to visualise winning all week but for some reason only thought I’d get second, which is so strange,” he said.

“This has been a great week here in Newcastle and it was great to have such good waves on the final day.”

The 34th anniversary of Surfest attracted more than 850 national and international competitors from over two dozen countries.
