Firefighters adding drone training to their toolkit

SHARE

Ross Anderson knows his drones.

The Novocastrian not only developed one of the first commercial drone training courses to be recognised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), but he also continues to work with the regulator to enable the safe use of drone technology.

In his latest venture the director of Aviassist has been teaching NSW firefighters how to use the remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) to assist during emergency situations.

Mr Anderson, a former commercial pilot, has logged more than 10,000 hours of practical flight instruction and over 20,000 hours of RPAS theory delivery.

This latest training, he says, will offer firefighters another eye in the sky, allowing them to better detect and fight fires.

“Drone technology has come so far with them now being used across many industries,” he said.

“Avaissist’s training will allow those working in Fire and Rescue NSW to better identify, monitor and fight fires.”

Through the program, firefighters can become certified drone operators in just one week.

“It’s great to see more people understanding the benefits of drones and the powerful things the small devices are capable of,” Mr Anderson added.

“I feel proud to facilitate the use of drones for Fire and Rescue NSW, and we look forward to seeing the great things operators will achieve through their use.”
