Filmmaker Jye Currie joins Craig Hamilton in ‘The Promise’

“..something is not quite right.”

It’s a line from the start of Craig Hamilton’s book entitled Broken Open

The 150-page memoir details the former ABC journalist’s very public mental breakdown and eventual recovery.

And, in April, Hamilton is teaming up with Newcastle filmmaker Jye Currie to bring the book to life in a documentary titled The Promise

The pair of Novocastrians are on a mission to tackle mental health and suicide prevention.

Their collaboration begins this month, with the film set to launch in October.

The title, Currie says, is a hint at what is to follow its release.

“All I can say now is that it’s a call to action at the end of the film,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“There will be more about this soon.”

The Promise: Jye Currie is keen to find a place behind the camera again.

Currie, through his company Green Frog Productions, has been the talent behind a collection of award-winning films.

His first feature film ‘Beat’ is available on Australian and US streaming services.

The 95-minute film that looks at homelessness and mental illness, is the largest independent film produced, written and directed in Newcastle.

It followed Currie’s earlier short documentary collaboration on mental illness entitled One Conversation

Currie has also dealt with the topic of domestic violence in film, too.

He says by partnering with best-selling author and mental health speaker Hamilton, he hopes to produce a ground-breaking documentary that increases mental health awareness and suicide prevention in Australia.

“I am proud to partner with Craig on this important project. Suicide is a serious issue that affects many Australians, and we hope that this film will help shed light on the issue and provide hope and support to those who need it,” he says.

The Promise: Craig Hamilton to lend a hand in a new production.

Hamilton, a former sports journalist of 20 years, is now a best-selling author, speaker, and mental health advocate who inspired thousands of people around Australia with his willingness to share his own battle with bipolar.

“I am excited to collaborate with Green Frog Productions on this project,” he says.

“Jye Currie’s films have always been at the forefront of socially conscious filmmaking in Australia, and I know that he will do my story and this topic justice.

“This documentary is more than a film, it’s a mission.

“I believe that this project has the power to make a real difference in the lives of Australians.”

The documentary is an adaptation of Craig’s bestselling book Broken Open and will feature interviews with mental health experts, survivors of suicide, and families affected by suicide.

Currie and Hamilton hope to explore the underlying causes and factors that contribute to suicide in Australia.

Their aspiration is that the documentary not only raises awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention, but also provides practical solutions and resources for those who may be struggling with their mental health.
