Festival stands test of time

Champion long-distance runner Steve Moneghetti and local speedster Vlad Shatrov are among the long list of competitors to race along one of the region’s most iconic courses.

The Lake Macquarie Running Festival, which winds around the shores of Warners Bay, will celebrate its 35th anniversary next weekend.

Event organiser Chad Griffith said the occasion would be marked by recognising some of the runners who had taken part in the past.

“This year we are acknowledging our Lake Mac Legends, who are runners that have completed the course 10 or more times over the years,” he said.

“We have runners like John McCain who have been with us from the very beginning and, at 79 years old, John is still running – it’s awesome.

“We’ve been a part of people’s running calendar since 1983 in Lake Macquarie, and we’ve seen other events come and go, but the Lake Mac run has stood the test of time.

“People love running along the beautiful shores of the lake and we’ve got one of the fastest courses going around, so the times are always quick.”

The festival will start with the half-marathon at 7.15am on Sunday 25 August.
