Community feedback is being sought on a proposal to formalise the name Steelworks Channel for a section of the Hunter River in Newcastle.
The stretch of water in question spans south of Port Waratah, extending southeast to Newcastle Harbour for approximately 3.5km.
Ironically, Steelworks Channel is already used colloquially and features on government authority maps and datasets, including those published by Port Authority NSW and Australian Hydrographic Office.
But, others may contain incorrect labels.
Hence why the Geographical Names Board (GNB) seeks public input to make the necessary change.
“The GNB is committed to formalising established names that are in use by the local community,” NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood explained.
“Ensuring consistent and accurate place names remains essential for clear communication and avoiding confusion, which can arise from alternative names being used for features.
“Formalising Steelworks Channel would guarantee all maps have the correct name and that it is used consistently on maps and in databases.
“Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.”

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date is 9 September.
