For Corynne and Scarlett Darcy, Star Struck is more than a school spectacular, it’s a family tradition spanning decades.

The mother and daughter duo will share a special connection when Out of the Ordinary takes to the stage at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre this week.

Scarlett, a featured vocalist from the Hunter School of the Performing Arts, is preparing for her 10th and final year in the production, while her mum Corynne returns as a choreographer after more than two decades of involvement.

“It’s a really full-circle moment,” the teen said.

In 2026, the Year 12 student will perform a solo in Beyond the Sea, a number choreographed by her mother.

“I helped choreograph the item with mum and now I’m singing the solo in it as well,” Scarlett said.

“It’s scary, but it’s also a nice closure to my time at Star Struck.”

Scarlett has spent the past decade taking part in almost every aspect of the show, including dance, drama, choir and featured artist roles.

For Corynne, a teacher at Wirreanda Public School, Star Struck’s been part of her life for about 25 years.

“We’re very much a Star Struck family,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“My older daughter completed 10 years in the show and now Scarlett is finishing her final year.

“It feels really special.”

Corynne said she was proud to see her daughter take centre stage in a performance they helped create together.

“To have the item I’ve choreographed feature Scarlett as the solo vocalist is really special,” she said.

While the younger Darcy hopes to study music at university and pursue a career in musical theatre, she said Star Struck had taught her the value of persistence.

“I auditioned for featured artist roles for years before I got one,” she explained.

“If you work hard and keep practicing, you can get there.”

More than 4,500 public school students from across the Hunter and Central Coast will perform in this year’s production, which takes place on Friday 12 June and Saturday 13 June.
