SHARE

The warm weather is the perfect time to get on your bike and explore Newcastle on two wheels.

Whether you’re introducing your kids to cycling or seeking a relaxed weekend ride, these family-friendly paths cater to all ages and skill levels.

Cycling is also a great way to explore the best scenery that our beautiful corner of the world has to offer.

Just remember to always check the condition of your bike before setting off, to wear a helmet and always be mindful of other riders and pedestrians (especially when using an e-bike at high speed).

Oh, and have fun!

Fernleigh Track (Adamstown to Belmont)

Stretching 15km along a former railway corridor, the Fernleigh Track is a well-used and loved route connecting Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Its gentle gradients (athough they don’t always feel that gentle from a bike seat!), shaded pathways, and historical features like the 181m curved brick tunnel make it ideal for families seeking adventure and fun.

Named after the clearing of ferns, the Fernleigh Track

Warners Bay to Speers Point

This 3.6km lakeside path offers stunning views of Lake Macquarie and features art sculptures along the way.

The flat, paved trail culminates at Speers Point Park, home to the expansive Lake Macquarie Variety Playground—perfect for a post-ride play session.

Eleebana to Warners Bay Foreshore

A shorter 2.1km ride starting at Lions Park in Eleebana, this flat path crosses the Red Bluff Shared Pathway over the water, leading to the vibrant Warners Bay Foreshore.

It’s a great option for younger riders or those seeking a leisurely walk and scoot that ends with a coffee and a treat in one of the many options at Warners Bay.

Newcastle Foreshore & Throsby Creek Loop

This 6.5km loop includes a blend of urban and natural landscapes, following the south edge of Newcastle Harbour and continuing along Throsby Creek.

With minimal street crossings and plenty of spots to rest or grab a bite to eat – Honeysuckle being the main port of call – it’s the perfect ride for families.

Hermitage Road Cycleway (Hunter Valley)

For a picturesque ride through wine country, the Hermitage Road Cycleway offers a 10.6km dedicated path from the New England Highway to Broke Road.

Families can enjoy cycling past vineyards, art galleries, and cafes, with opportunities to stop and explore.

The flat terrain ensures an easy ride for all ages. And if you do choose to stop in at a winery for a tasting please remember that drink-driving rules apply to cyclists, so drink responsibly!

Deadmans Mountain Bike Loop (Werakata National Park)

Don’t let the name scare you (!) this easy 8km loop near Cessnock winds through the bushland of Werakata National Park.

Starting near Astills Picnic Area, the flat trail is suitable for families with mountain bikes (or walkers on foot) and offers opportunities to spot an array of native wildlife along the way.

Happy cycling!
