Extraction (MA 15+): Review

SHARE

Extraction is not a film for everyone. Are you after a storyline? Not for you. Do you get upset at the sight and sound of extreme violence? You might want to give this a miss. However, if you love action films, are a fan of shoot ‘em up video games, or even just Chris Hemsworth (raises hand) you are in for one heck of a ride.

Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, and Joe and Anthony Russo, Extraction is a new addition to Netflix’s film line-up and features Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary with nothing to lose, who is hired to rescue a drug lord’s kidnapped son.

And that’s about all the information divulged, which contributes to the film’s weak point – the purpose and motivation behind the kidnapping that starts the whole shebang.

What works in the film’s favour, however, is the charismatic performance of Hemsworth (Aussie accent and all) who is on screen for majority of the runtime, and generally kicks ass.

There is a little bit of background provided as to why Rake is the way he is, however this film is not about character development but fast-paced action, a highlight of which is an almost 12 minute, single-take sequence.

Despite almost two hours’ runtime, Extraction is relatively well-paced. While there’s the occasional breather from the non-stop action, these sequences are often the film’s weaker elements.

Verdict: An action-packed, and brutal ride – good luck keeping track of the body count! Extraction is definite escapism, although not necessarily a film you will watch on repeat. 2.5 stars.

Extraction is now streaming on Netflix.
