Everyone can Play at McFarlane Street Playground

Cessnock City Council’s plans to upgrade the McFarlane Street Playground have been boosted by a $60,000 windfall.

The organisation announced this week it was successful in receiving the hefty grant under the NSW Government’s Everyone can Play program.

Council will match this funding dollar-for-dollar, making it a $120,000 enhancement to the playground.

Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal welcomed the financial assistance to complete the project.

“The Everyone can Play initiative supports the creation of inclusive play spaces across NSW by partnering with local councils to design and construct new, or upgrade existing, playgrounds,” he said.

“This endeavour involves upgrading the existing play space at McFarlane Street and providing new inclusive play equipment including a see-saw and carousel for our community to enjoy.”

Works will also include making repairs to the existing play equipment, the provision of a 1.5-metre wide accessible concrete path through the playground, and the construction of a new picnic shelter with accessible seating.

Cr Suvaal said he was looking forward to seeing the development kick off.

“Continuing to upgrade our local parks is one of my key priorities as mayor, so this news is just fantastic,” he stated.

“With its ageing equipment and lack of inclusive play options, McFarlane Street Playground is certainly in need of an upgrade.

“I’m sure local residents will welcome the news, too.”
