Emma White: What is a ‘special occasion’ wine?

SHARE

Let me guess. You’ve got a really good bottle of wine at home… and you’re not drinking it.

If you don’t, you’ve got a friend that has one.

It’s sitting there, quietly collecting dust, or sitting in an expensive wine fridge, waiting for something “special”.

Meanwhile, it’s Friday night and you’ve just cracked open something from the bottle shop that’s… fine. Not amazing. Just… there.

We’ve all done it.

We save the good wine for the big moments; birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, something worthy. Something that feels like it deserves it.

But, here’s the reality.

Life doesn’t hand out those perfectly-curated moments very often. And, when it does, they’re usually a bit messier, louder and less Instagram-worthy than we imagined.

So, the “special bottle” waits… and waits… and waits.

While the everyday moments, the ones that actually make up your life, get the average wine.

Backwards, isn’t it?

The best wine moments aren’t the ones you plan months in advance. They’re the ones that just happen. A last-minute catch-up. A long lunch that turns into dinner. A spontaneous decision to stop in somewhere and try something new.

That’s where the good bottle belongs.

Not on a shelf. Not in an overly-priced fridge. Not waiting for perfection. Just… open.

And, there’s a shift happening. I see it every weekend at the cellar door.

People are over the rules. They’re opening better wine more often. They’re turning ordinary moments into something a bit more memorable, whether that’s a glass with dumplings, a picnic in the vines, or just deciding that today is as good a day as any.

Because the world’s a bit busy, a bit unpredictable and, honestly… a bit too short to keep waiting for the perfect moment.

So, here’s my advice.

Stop letting your best wine gather dust while you drink something “else”. Open it. Share it (if you must).

But, most of all, enjoy it.

Even if it’s just takeaway on a Friday night. Actually, especially then.

And, if you need a place to start… you know where to find us.

Cheers everyone!
