In a major coup for the region, the recently-redeveloped Hunter Sports Centre will host the 2025 Gymnastics NSW Country Championships and Gymsport Invitational this week.
It’s understood approximately 1,100 participants – representing 37 clubs – supported by 550 coaches, officials and judges are bound for the Glendale facility from 30 September to 5 October.
They’ll compete in seven unique styles, including FreeG, TeamGym, men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, rhythmic, acrobatics and trampoline gymnastics.
There will be inclusive competition formats such as masters and Special Olympics, too, with the latter taking place from 9am on Thursday 2 October.
Since its inception in 1993, the Gymnastics NSW Country Championships has become the flagship event for regionally-based athletes from across the state.
“We’re delighted to be bringing everyone to the state-of-the-art Hunter Sports Centre,” chief executive officer Rebecca Shaw said.
“As an organisation, we pride ourselves on providing opportunities for all our participants to showcase their abilities and the Country Championships enable athletes from regional, rural and remote parts of the state to not only compete against each other for prestigious state titles but put their best foot forward in terms of talent identification.
“I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to both the NSW Government and Lake Macquarie City Council for their unwavering support of this year’s championships.
“They, along with the Commonwealth, have funded the expansion of the Hunter Sports Centre where it’s now a destination facility for events like the Gymnastics NSW Country Championships and Gymsport Invitational, along with Australia’s leading gymnasts on the runway to Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
The 2025 edition will be the first time the venue has hosted the competition since its $52 million makeover earlier this year, which includes the Trampoline Centre of Excellence.
“It is pleasing to see exciting sporting events like this staged in regional NSW,” NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said.
“The 2025 Gymnastics NSW Country Championships & Gymsport Invitational will bring together communities across the state and, in the case of this event, inject a predicted $2 million into the local economy.
“The NSW Government’s investment in this important infrastructure demonstrates our focus on supporting sport at all levels – from grassroots through to elite.”
It’s anticipated up to 4,000 spectators will attend the 2025 Gymnastics NSW Country Championships & Gymsport Invitational, featuring local representatives from Advance Academy of Gymnastics, Eastlake Trampoline Sports, Hunter Sports Centre and Hunter Valley Gymnastics.
