Drunk driver sideswipes unmarked Police car in Mayfield

A Shortland man has been charged with drink driving after his vehicle sideswiped an unmarked Police car in Mayfield on Tuesday night.

The driver hit the car parked on Maitland Road about 10:45pm.

He allegedly failed to stop and continued driving along Maitland Road.

A short time later, police from Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team stopped the vehicle on Woodstock Street, Mayfield.

The 49-year-old driver underwent a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive reading.

He was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station where a breath analysis allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.167.

The man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for driving with high-range blood-alcohol and refusing to give particulars to another driver.

He will appear before Newcastle Local Court in May 2024.

Police also suspended the man’s driver licence.

The arrest comes in the wake of what Police are calling Easter Operation 2024 – a five-day blitz on drivers designed to reduce road fatalities and road trauma this holiday weekend.
