Double demerits in force across NSW for Labour Day long weekend

SHARE

Hunter motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads this Labour Day long weekend, with double demerits coming into force from Friday.

Operation Labour Day will run from 12am Friday 2 October until 11.59pm Monday 5 October, with police targeting dangerous driving behaviours across NSW.

Double demerit points will apply during the four-day period as increased traffic is expected across the road network for the long weekend, NSW school holidays and NRL Grand Final.

Police will target speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt and helmet offences, along with drink and drug driving and fatigue.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers will lead the operation, supported by general duties and specialist police across the state.

The long weekend comes during a concerning year on NSW roads, with 261 people killed so far in 2026, compared with 250 at the same point last year.

Motorists heading away for the weekend are being encouraged to allow additional travel time, take regular breaks and avoid taking risks to save a few minutes.

Drivers are also reminded to make sure all passengers are wearing seatbelts, mobile phones are put away and speed limits are followed throughout their journey.

Labour Day falls on Monday 5 October this year.

Double demerits will remain in force until 11.59pm Monday.
