Hunter Drama brings classic Dot & The Kangaroo JR. to Newcastle

SHARE

Newcastle audiences are in for a treat these April school holidays, as Hunter Drama kicks off its 2025 season with a magical and musical production of Dot & The Kangaroo JR.

Based on Ethel C. Pedley’s 1899 novel, this new adaptation of the classic Aussie book was written by Hunter Drama’s founder Daniel Stoddart.

“I always loved the book as a kid,” he says.

“In 2020 I started working on a stage adaptation of the book. I couldn’t believe that no one had done it before.

“Music Theatre International have licensed the production so it’s now open for theatre companies all around the world to put Dot and the Kangaroo JR. on the stage. I’m so pleased that Hunter Drama has chosen to stage it in 2025.”

Audiences will enjoy Dot’s journey through the heart of the Australian bush in a tale of adventure, friendship, and discovery.

Directing the Newcastle premiere is Allison van Gaal, a seasoned director who is returning to her musical theatre roots after years in the adult indie scene.

Excited to bring this much-loved story to life, she says working on the show has been both a creative and personal joy.

“I was instantly drawn to the opportunity to direct my great friend Daniel’s work,” Allison explains.

“More than that, I love working on new pieces that allow for creative exploration.

“There’s something special about discovering lesser-known characters and bringing them to life with such talented young actors.”

For Allison, the story of Dot & The Kangaroo holds a special place in her heart.

“I remember watching the cartoon as a child and being captivated by its magic,” she recalls.

“The themes of family, connection, and respect for our environment are more important now than ever.

“As a society, we need to honour our land, our wildlife, and the First Nations people who have protected it for generations.”

The story follows Dot, a plucky young girl who befriends a wise mother kangaroo after she becomes lost in the Australian bush.

As the pair journey together to find Dot’s home, they encounter various iconic Australian creatures, each helping Dot get back to her family.

With two Hunter Drama casts bringing the production to life, audiences will enjoy a visually stunning show filled with heart, music, and a touch of nostalgia.

Don’t miss this timeless Australian children’s classic when it takes the stage at The Playhouse, Civic Theatre Newcastle, from 16–26 April.

Tickets are on sale now — don’t miss the chance to experience the magic of Dot & The Kangaroo JR.
