The push to enhance sporting facilities throughout the region continues, with Max McMahon Oval the latest to undergo a much-needed facelift.

It comes after a $3.1 million outlay on the Rutherford site, which includes a new amenities block.

Funded by the Australian Government under the Investing in Our Communities Program, with contributions from Maitland City Council, the building features four unisex changerooms, accessible public areas, a canteen, first aid and referee’s rooms, a timekeeping room and tiered seating.

“The latest facilities are a game-changer for local clubs and players,” Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said.

“We’re proud to deliver these amenities for sporting groups in west Maitland, particularly Maitland Saints AFL Club and Western Suburbs Cricket Club.

“They helped us come up with the most suitable design and were instrumental in securing the grant funding.

“Both sports are growing in popularity in our community and, now, they have the supporting facilities they need to grow into the future.”

Paterson MP Meryl Swanson agreed.

“I made a $3 million vow to this project during the 2022 election because I know how important Max McMahon Oval is to families and sporting organisations in Maitland’s west,” she said.

“It’s a long-awaited upgrade… and I am proud to back it.

“This commitment is now delivered – with modern, accessible amenities that support players, officials and spectators alike.

“It’s an investment in participation, community pride and the future of our local sport.”

The latest facilities will be open to clubs for training and match days, offering major accessibility improvements to players and the wider public.

It follows similar ventures at Dora Creek’s Douglass Street Oval ($2.1 million – Lake Macquarie LGA), Weston Bears Park ($3 million – Cessnock LGA) and Speers Point’s Macquarie Field ($2.7 million – Lake Macquarie LGA) in the past month.
