Don the ‘jim-jams’ for 2025 Sleap Walk

Following the success of the inaugural Sleap Walk in 2024, anticipation is high ahead of the second edition this month.

More than 100 people donned their pyjamas and strolled around Newcastle’s East End to raise funds for Sleapy’s Foundation’s pet project, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Courtyard at the John Hunter Hospital.

The vital space is being designed to provide comfort and respite for critically-ill children and their families when they need it most.

Now, all the attention will turn to the charity’s latest fundraiser, which takes place from The Station on Saturday 15 November.

Participants, who must wear their favourite PJs, jammies, jim-jams or best “sleepwear”, can register from 4pm.

“That’s the standard dress code,” Peter Sleap said with a laugh.

“It’s all about having some fun while making a real difference to someone else’s life… one step at a time.

“We were blown away by the support last year.

“So, we’re keen to build on that momentum.

“Even better, it’s a family and pet-friendly event, which promises something for everyone.

“Whether you’re walking with your relatives, your friends or teaming up with your workplace, Sleap Walk is a chance to connect, move and make memories.

“People are welcome to brings their dogs, cats, rabbits… whatever.

“If they’ve got a rat, they can put a chain on it and walk it.

“We’ll also have activations before and after the Sleap Walk, like face painting, music, laser tag, stalls, food and more.”

Mr Sleap, wife Robynn and the foundation’s team are determined to leave an enduring legacy, via the PICU Courtyard.

“Let’s be honest, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is often a daunting place,” he said.

“But, with everyone’s support, we can establish a peaceful outdoor retreat where families are able to embrace moments of calm during difficult times.

“From equipment to seasonal upkeep, your contributions will help keep this sanctuary a safe and soothing haven for years to come.

“No child or their family should miss out on the simple joys of childhood, like celebrating birthdays, feeling the sun on their face or sharing a moment of peace together.

“But, every year, more than 700 children (and their families) find themselves, often unexpectedly, in the care of the PICU at John Hunter.

“Take someone like Cameron McCallum.

“He holds the record for 465 days spent in PICU.

“I’m sure you can imagine what access to a space like the courtyard would have meant to him during his treatment.

“Cameron participated in the event in 2024.

“So, funds raised through Sleap Walk will help maintain the PICU Courtyard, ensuring families will always have a beautiful space to acknowledge milestones, breathe fresh air and find comfort during the darkest days.”
