It’s being described as “a joyful craze sweeping the nation”.
When my girlfriends in Brisbane attended their first DISCO CLUB recently, it was all I heard about for weeks, with pics of huge smiles and footage of tears of laughter and plenty of their dance moves I hadn’t seen in years, filling their Instagram pages.
Their warning to me when they learned the event was set to travel to fresh destinations was “don’t miss it.”
So, I was thrilled when I read Lise and Sarah’s DISCO CLUB would be coming to Newcastle dance floors for the first time this month.

The event being dubbed “the ultimate night out for women” will take place at King Street on Saturday 21 September.
Since its humble Brisbane launch 18 months ago, DISCO CLUB has been touring Australia delivering an electric night of dancing and singing with friends in a judgement-free, safe, friendly space.
Founded by best friends and podcasters, Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills, it’s danced with tens of thousands of women at sold-out events in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth.
Women of the Hunter are destined to be the latest in line.
“DISCO CLUB is everything you miss about clubbing and nothing you don’t,” says Lise.

“It all started with a simple conversation between us about how much we missed a night out dancing with our girlfriends,” said Sarah (whose husband is a Bowen mango farmer).
“We wanted to create joyful moments through the shared experience of a judgement-free night of dancing where everyone feels comfortable and welcome, and we can all revel in nostalgia together.
“So many of our crew have Newcastle and Hunter Valley connections and they tell us these ladies absolutely love to kick up their heels, so there’s no way we weren’t going to include it on the map for the 2024 tour.”
Think hundreds of women of all ages in sparkles, sneakers, maxi-dresses, shorts, ball gowns and cowboy boots, making their signature moves to music from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s (Whitney! Britney! Celine! Beyonce!), peppered with classics across the decades and some modern bangers to boot.

Another essential element is the early start and finish time.
“While we wanted a fun night out, we also wanted to be in our pjs by 11pm and found out we are not alone. We’re busy people, we’re juggling a lot, we have responsibilities – it’s so important to take time to recharge but to do it in a way that works for us,” said Sarah.
Lise and Sarah have been making their own dreams come true as they bring their trademark friendship, humour and warmth and join the crowds on the dance floor at each event.
“That’s the best part for me,” said Lise.
“We get to speak to so many women – we’re screaming song lyrics, busting moves, we’re sweaty and we’re glowing.

“We get to meet their friends, their mothers, their daughters, to see the pure joy up close, over and over again.
“It means the world to us that this little thing we imagined has brought so much happiness to so many. You can’t ask for more than that.”
I, for one, am planning to dig up my best night club moves, hunt down my purple satin London pants and get to the session at King Street and have the time of my life.
Hope to see you there girlfriends!
