Dinosaurs take over wetlands

Something prehistoric has been dug up at the Hunter Wetlands Centre.

In an Australian-first, a to-scale dig site, complete with a full dinosaur skeleton, has been recreated as part of a special exhibition these school holidays.

The Dinosaurs and More exhibition will be open to the public from 9.30am to 1.30pm until Saturday 27 April.

Volunteer Jess Jones says it will provide visitors with a rare experience.

“Most of us won’t have the opportunity to see an in-situ dinosaur dig site; this really is the next best thing,” she says.
Families will also be able to find Dino Dioramas during a walk around the wetlands. These pieces of art are filled with intrigue and information about the historical inhabitants.

Kids of all ages can then get their hands on some dino craft in the Craftosaurus space or enjoy a game of Dino Hopscotch.

Visitors may also take a self-guided tour of the wetlands, meet the resident reptiles and enjoy a special dinosaur-themed meal at the wetlands’ café.

The exhibition has been sponsored by Newcastle council.

Volunteer Val Noake says it can be difficult to organise an affordable and family-friendly event without the council’s financial support.

“All parents know the struggle of finding fun and inexpensive things to fill up the school holidays,” she says.

“We are excited to be able to provide a day of wonder to a family of four for under $25.”

All profits from the exhibition will go towards maintaining the wetlands.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for kids.

The exhibition will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day.
